Optis - Ages 9 - 14 (approximately)

Opti sessions are presented midweek mornings (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. All levels of Opti training occur simultaneously; the coaching staff will assign students to the appropriate level of instruction.

Please note: the following information is for group sailing lessons. Private instruction may be available by special arrangement. Please contact the Program Director to learn more.

Sessions One and Five  are ONE WEEK SESSIONS. Sessions Two, Three and Four are TWO WEEK SESSIONS. Every Friday of each session is dedicated to racing for fun (morning, regardless of class; regular Friday afternoon races will still be held).

Opti I

The Optimist, or Opti, is one of the most successful boat designs in history. With more than 150,000 boats worldwide. It has helped countless kids learn to sail.

This class is designed to get kids feeling comfortable sailing by themselves. Beginning with very basic techniques, the Opti 1 classes focus on the following skills: rigging, boat controls (tiller and mainsheet), points of sail, tacking and gybing, upwind sailing, capsize recovery and general seamanship (safety, knots, rules of the road, parts of the boat).

Students in this group must provide their own Opti. The Club has several boats available for weekly rental.

Opti II

In Opti II sessions, students refine their skills from Opti I, including mastery of points of sail.

Opti II also introduces skills required on the race course (and Opti racing is FUN!). Students learn how race courses work; they learn to understand starting sequences, and, most importantly, the special rules for sailing safely on a race course. They also learn about hiking technique, roll tacking (which helps maintain speed) and how to recognize a lay line. Participation in Unkie (interclub) races  is encouraged .

Students in this group must provide their own Opti. The Club has several boats available for weekly rental.

Opti Racing

Opti Racing focuses on refining skills and advanced racing techniques. We develop deeper understanding of racing rules and mastery of different types of race courses.

Students hone skills at the start line and on the course - including identification of the favored end of the line, how to spot and take advantage of wind shifts, and how each skipper can fine-tune their rig to match conditions.
Because this is a race-oriented class, participation in Unkie and other SMSA regattas is strongly encouraged.

Students in this group must provide their own Opti. The Club has several boats available for weekly rental.
